A LOVE STORY

Once upon a time a very handsome man fell deeply in love with a young girl. He began to court her. He called her on the telephone and they talked of many things. He played his favorite songs for her. He placed bouquets of sweet smelling flowers on her table. He asked her on long walks through lighted streets ringing with laughter. He took her swimming in a lake filled with diamonds and giggling waves. He visited her often and shared his dreams.

He told her he was going to marry her. She was shy and nervous and laughed when he said this. This hurt his feelings because he thought she was laughing at him. Time passed. He continued to court her. They were together more and more often. They became the closest of friends. One day he told her he loved her. He gave her a ring. He asked her to marry him.

She loved him too and she said "yes".

They were married that summer. They did many wonderful and different things together. They did not always agree with each other. Sometimes they even argued about things but that was all right. They talked about them and worked together to solve their problems.

Life continued. Time passed. She taught school and he wrote wonderful poems and stories. She became very involved and busy with her job. She also became very cranky sometimes. They didn't talk as much anymore. They didn't take long walks and laugh together. They didn't even go swimming very often. He became lonely and tired of doing things by himself. He still wrote beautiful poems and stories but it didn't seem like there was anyone to share them with.

Then one day the girl noticed how quiet it was. She looked at her husband and saw such sadness. It hurt her. She began to wonder what had happened. She soon realized the beauty and mystery of the gift she had been given. She began to know how very much she had neglected and criticized this precious man.

She felt ashamed. She felt sorry for the mean things she had said and the ways in which she had hurt him. She wondered if it was too late. Would she be able to make things better between them? She didn't exactly know where to start but she thought that perhaps she could begin by writing a story for him - like this one.
